Registering a Car Bought in Another State

When you’re buying a car in another state, you’ll need to register in your home state as soon as possible. But adding your license plate to your new vehicle is pretty easy. First, you’ll need to get a bill of sale from the dealership and make sure it lists the purchase price clearly. Then, find your local DMV on a website like DMV Near Me. Finally, you’ll need to bring the following items to your lDMV:

  • Bill of sale
  • Completed application for vehicle transaction form
  • Title of the vehicle signed by the previous owner
  • Lienholders’ names and address
  • Filled out odometer disclosure state for title transfer
  • Tax Form RUT-50 Private Party Vehicle Tax Transaction
  • Registration Fees
  • Proof of insurance
  • Proof of residency

Let the clerk know that you want to register and title your new car to your current address. The clerk will mostly likely return your bill of sale, but keep your title. You’ll pay the difference in sales tax between the two states and receive your new title in the mail.

Taxes and Fees on Out-of-State Cars

When buying a car in another state, there are a few fees to keep in mind. You’ll need to know your state’s tax and the sales tax in the dealer’s state since you’ll pay the difference at the DMV. You’ll also need to pay processing fees at the DMV. When buying a car at Mercedes-Benz of St. George, you also may need to pay document fees.
